“When I was 15 years old, I became convinced through social media that the teenage depression and discomfort I was experiencing was actually gender dysphoria, and that if I did not start the process of transitioning into a boy, my mental health would worsen. As I believed that I was factually supposed to be a boy - my female body became a prison. I quickly obtained a letter to start testosterone after only 2-3 months of biweekly sessions with a transgender therapist, who was known in my town for her work with transgender kids and adults. Since transitioning was proposed as the only cure for my gender dysphoria, I remained on testosterone prescriptions for 7 years, while continuing to neglect my mental health and the root of my depression. Identifying as transgender was a bandaid for my struggles for years.
As I reached adulthood and continued my journey of self-realization with proper mental health resources, including an autism assessment, I soon realized that the “gender dysphoria” I was experiencing was actually related to other mental health issues, and that nothing regarding my biological sex factually required medicalization through hormones. I started to desire being a wife and a mother, and knew that if I continued to live as transgender, neither of those dreams would be possible. Identifying as transgender limited my future, as well as my ability to ever accept myself in the past or present.
I hope that every young girl knows that she can be non-conforming, a tomboy, and reject traditional femininity without having to reject and suppress femaleness altogether. No person is born in the wrong body.”
